Love 'em or hate 'em, Canadian rock band Nickelback will perform during the NHL's awards show in Las Vegas on June 20.
The group, which hails from Hanna, Alta., also performed during the 2002 NHL awards show in Toronto.
"As die-hard hockey fans, we can never get enough of the NHL, even when we're on tour," said Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, on NHL.com. "And there is nothing more exciting for hockey fans than the Playoffs. The NHL Awards is the culmination of celebrating the best players and moments the season has produced. We're honoured and humbled to perform at the 2012 NHL Awards in Las Vegas."
The announcement is part of a strategic alliance between the NHL and the band. The partnership also calls for the integration of Nickelback's music into highlight reels during the upcoming Stanley Cup Conference Finals and promotion of the NHL on Nickelback's digital and social media platforms.
The band is not without its critics.
Nickelback was criticized by some NFL fans in Detroit weeks before they were to play a halftime show during the U.s. Thanksgiving holiday last season. They were also a target of a Web protest leading up to the game as more than 55,000 people signed a petition denouncing their music and asking the NFL to select a different act.
However, the band received a lukewarm reception from Lions fans, with just a smattering of boos.
