Jets gear flying off store shelves
By QMI Agency
WINNIPEG - Jets gear is always a high-scoring product for local retailers, but hype about the possible return of an NHL franchise to Winnipeg has sales in a breakaway.
At Pro Hockey Life, customers were phoning Friday well before the Polo Park area store opened its doors at 10 a.m. to inquire about the selection of Jets merchandise, said store director Trent Wall.
“We’ve sold almost all of our jerseys. We sell every shirt and hat we get,” said Wall.
A recent shipment of vintage Dale Hawerchuk T-shirts with the original NHL Jets logo proved particularly popular, said Wall, adding, “we pretty well sold out this morning.”
Even the pricey products are snapped up. Wall said his store recently sold a Jets jersey signed by Teemu Selanne. The price tag — $949. Not including tax.
Across Winnipeg at River City Sports, shoppers can’t get enough of the Jets either.
“Pretty much 80 to 90% of our customers have been looking for Jets stuff. It’s been nuts here all day,” said Zak Rubin, retailer general manager of Winnipeg’s three River City Sports locations.
“The first two people that walked in the door asked about Jets stuff.”
In fact, the Henderson Highway store has only a small handful of Jets T-shirts in stock, Rubin said. Never fear, loyal fans — a new shipment is expected early next week.
“It feels closer than it’s ever been before. But we’ve been waiting 15, 16 years for this,” said Rubin.
