ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Anaheim Ducks defenceman Andy Sutton will be sidelined for 6-to-8 weeks after Tuesday's surgery to repair a broken right thumb.

The veteran backliner suffered the injury while fighting Red Wings defenceman Ruslan Salei in Detroit in Friday's season opener.

Sutton, who signed a two-year contract with the Ducks in the off-season, split last season with the New York Islanders and Ottawa and totaled five goals and eight assists to go with 107 penalty minutes in 72 games. His 204 blocked shots last year ranked second in the league.

The 35-year-old has scored 35 goals and accumulated 136 points and 1,020 penalty minutes in 586 games during his 12 seasons in the league with San Jose, Minnesota and Atlanta in addition to the Islanders, Senators and Ducks.
