As expected, Brian Burke was named executive vice-president and general manager of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks yesterday, while the new owners said they may rename the team.

The announcement was pending National Hockey League approval of the sale of the team to Henry and Susan Samueli from Walt Disney Co. last week.

Burke, a former NHL executive, general manager of the Vancouver Canucks and, most recently, a TSN analyst, will begin his tenure by meeting with incumbent head coach Mike Babcock to determine his future and formulating a plan to make the them a tougher team.

"You can't have skilled players in this game unless you provide them with some support on the physical side and we'll do that," Burke said.

Samueli said he and his wife are committed to keeping the team in Anaheim, but are open to changing the nickname if that's what the fans want.

"That's definitely been a topic of discussion," he said. "For this coming season, there will be no change ... We do like the name. And we like the logo. One possibility is to just be the Ducks. It's not something we have a great desire to change."
