OTTAWA - Even Daniel Alfredsson’s teammates were cheering for him.

Playing alongside Vancouver Canucks twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin, they badly wanted the Senators captain to score his third goal of the all-star game just so Alfredsson could bring the Ottawa crowd to its feet.

“It was an honour for both of us to play with him,” said Henrik Sedin. “He was a guy that we looked up too growing up and as soon as we came over (to North America).

“I was a little surprised (at the reaction of the fans). I’ve never been part of a reception like that where a guy has been there for a long time. I didn’t know how much they really appreciated him here, so it was fun to be a part of it.”

Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, Alfredsson’s assistant captain for the weekend, was amazed by the reaction.

“It’s been very cool to watch the reception the people of Ottawa gave to Daniel Alfredsson,” said Lundqvist.

Some wondered if perhaps Boston goalie Tim Thomas should have stepped aside to let Alfredsson score his third. But the competitive Thomas wasn’t going to let that happen and made two huge stops at the end..

“I wasn’t thinking about (Alfredsson’s) hat trick,” said Thomas. “I just didn’t want the other team to get any closer because all of a sudden the way goals get scored in these games … boom, boom, boom… you could get three goals scored in a minute-and-a-half. I didn’t want to let anybody score. It wasn’t anything against Alfie.”

Henrik Sedin said nobody would have appreciated a gift.

“If you give him the hat trick I don’t think it’s the same as when you score three good ones,” said Sedin. “He hit the post once as well. He was close.”
