When Gary Bettman approaches the podium Friday evening to announce the first pick of the 2014 NHL draft — and this being Philly, it’s a slam dunk that The Commish will be greeted by boos — there will be some very interested teenagers closely monitoring the proceedings.

For names like Conner McDavid, Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner, this will be much more than just a reality show determining where the Members of the Class of 2014 will end up.

It will also be a glimpse into their own potential futures.

“Seeing the guys get picked (Friday), I’ll probably be thinking: “That could be me one day,” Marner said during a phone interview on Thursday. “At least I hope so.”
