How your team would be faring in a shootout-free NHL

Let's walk down a hypothetical pathway for a moment, hockey fans.

Before the 2005-06 NHL season, when the league resumed play following a lockout, both regular season and playoff games were decided similarly.

Games were settled via overtime. Shootouts didn't exist in the NHL.

The only difference was that in the post-season, overtime ended only when a goal was scored. In the regular season, ties and overtime losses each had a column in the standings.

Now, the shootout is a fixture in the regular season — heading into Friday's games, it had decided 13.8% of games this year — yet it is taken off the table come playoff time.

We're in the home stretch now. Teams have between nine and 13 games left in their regular-season schedule.

That has us thinking: Who is in trouble in the shootout-free playoffs? Who has benefited most from the so-called skills competition that is irrelevant next month?

Here is each team's overall record after Thursday's games, its record in the shootout, and its adjusted overall record that replaces shootout results with ties:

Current record | Shootout record | Adjusted record (wins-losses-ties-OT losses)

  • San Jose - 46-18-7 (99 points) | 10-5 | 42-12-15-2 (101 points)
