On a warm summer night around a barbecue dinner, mom had some advice for her husband, the radio program director.

“These kids are nice,” said Francis Mackowycz, “why don’t you give them a job?”

Dad complied. The job paid $30 a week, split three ways. They had one radio show to do — overnight. Probably no one was listening at 3 in the morning. That’s where George Stroumboulopoulos began his broadcasting career: He and Jeff Marek and Bob Mackowycz Jr., son of the Fan 590’s man in charge at the time.

“Jeff Marek was my best friend from the age of 10 on. We played baseball together at High Park,” said young Mackowycz.” They played for the Orioles. “Years later, Jeff was working at a graveyard and dad got him a job at the radio station, working on a promotion or something. Dad told us, you’ve got to meet this guy, George.

“We did — and we’ve all been best friends ever since.”
