A look at winners and losers at the NHL trade deadline.

WINNERS

Montreal Canadiens

At the last minute, the Habs swooped in and grabbed Thomas Vanek, the player most hockey people considered to be the best natural goal-scorer available on the market. As enigmatic as this guy can be, he gives the Habs a true game-changer in an Eastern Conference where there is a logjam for playoff spots. “For me, it’s the message that Marc (GM Bergevin) is sending to the players,” coach Michel Therrien said. The message? We can win now. Even though Vanek becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer, giving up prospect Sebastian Collberg and a conditional draft pick doesn’t seem like a lot.
