To think, not long ago it looked like the three biggest available names leading up to the NHL’s trade deadline day were Thomas Vanek, Matt Moulson and Michael Cammalleri.

That’s changed in a hurry with the reports Tampa Bay Lightning star and Team Canada gold medallist Martin St. Louis and Vancouver Canucks standout centre Ryan Kesler have both requested trades.

What was shaping up to be a rather dull event — let’s face it, Vanek will be the plumb — now has plenty of intrigue.

As much as St. Louis et al have been tight-lipped about whether it’s indeed true he wants out of the Sunshine State and why, while both Kesler and his agent have said the reports are false, it adds some fun to the deadline.

For those looking to sell off Moulson and Cammalleri, it also adds buzz — and that’s a good thing.
