Steve Yzerman will doff his general manager’s hat and throw on a helmet and skates for one more game.
The former Detroit Red Wings captain and current GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning will play in the Alumni Showdown that is part of the Winter Classic festivities at Comerica Park, the Red Wings announced Tuesday. Detroit will play the Toronto Maple Leafs in the outdoor game at Michigan Stadium on Jan. 1, the day after the alumni game between the same two teams.
“This event is an opportunity to celebrate the history of the Red Wings and I’m happy to be involved,” Yzerman said.
Yzerman, who captained the Red Wings from 1986-2006 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010, had not previously committed to playing in the alumni game because of his duties as GM of the Lightning and the Canadian men’s team that will compete in the Sochi Olympics. But he will again suit up in red and white against the Leafs alongside the likes of Igor Larionov, Tomas Holmstrom, Chris Chelios, Paul Coffey, Nicklas Lidstrom, Sergei Fedorov and Brendan Shanahan.
“Steve is one of the greatest Red Wings players ever,” Detroit GM Ken Holland said. “His presence at the Alumni Showdown makes a great day even better.”
