Class act that he is, when Rob Blake sits in the audience watching the 2013 Hockey Hall of Fame inductees deliver their speeches Monday night, the former star defenceman will harbour no bitterness at not being up on the stage himself thanking everyone from his parents to his minor hockey coaches.
At the same time, he admits that, at some point, he’ll look up there and think: “One day, that could be me.”
It says here that it should be as soon as next year.
Blake’s time has come, and, 12 months from now, it will be a surprise — and, for that matter, a disappointment — if he isn’t being presented with his own personal Hall blazer.
Blake, the long-time star defenceman of the Kings, Avs and Sharks, was eligible to be inducted in 2013. In most years, he likely would have, too.
But this time around, there were just too many deserving individuals and not enough spots.
