We received a ton of e-mails and letters from readers in response to my pro-fighting column on Tuesday.

Some were supportive. Some weren’t. One guy wanted to know if I was smoking crack. Yeah, I get it, with the timing and everything. But hey, just because I’m from Etobicoke doesn’t mean I smoke crack. Many of us out here lead normal, healthy lives. The truth is, straight or wasted, I believe that fighting has a place in NHL hockey, a sentiment expressed by no less than the great Bobby Orr.

Still, many readers (or guys who passed on the gist of my column to their pals), took offence to my appreciation of the combative arts, although I did receive as much support. A guy named “Russell” suggested that hockey players “are, by far, the dumbest athletes in any physical sport. Ask a college grid if he thinks fighting is a good thing and see what he says.”
