Anaheim Ducks left winger Dustin Penner didn’t travel to Toronto on Monday after being on the receiving end of a check that left him Bambi-legged on the ice.

Dallas Stars forward Ryan Garbutt delivered the blow midway through the second period of Sunday night’s game, a 6-3 win for the home side.

Garbutt wasn’t penalized on the play.

“While Penner continues to show improvement, he will be further evaluated and undergo tests today in Orange County, as per protocol,” the Ducks announced Monday.

A day after being helped off the ice, the 31-year-old Penner hit back on Twitter, going after the officials who he thought should have punished Garbutt for what appeared to be a hit to the head.

“To whom it may concern.....black&white vertical stripes.Orange horizontal stripe) Might of been 2 min minor??”

According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Garbutt is scheduled to have an in-person hearing related to the incident, meaning he could join a substantial list of fellow NHLers who have faced early-season disciplinary action stemming from illegal hits to the head.
