With pre-season almost out of the way, the handful of perceived NHL goalkeeping battles appear to be far from settled:

Maple Leafs: This one looks like it won’t be settled right away, if ever, with little separation emerging between Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer from pre-season action. At some point in the long season, though, one will get dinged-up or get hot enough to carry the team for several games in a row. But, barring a trade, don’t be surprised if this projected even split lasts the entire season.

Devils: Cory Schneider has been brilliant in the pre-season (.030 GAA, .988 SV%) and a case is being made for a similar equal split with Martin Brodeur, who many figured would play 50-55 games in this his final NHL season. Schneider will likely get the opening-night assignment with Brodeur back home grieving the passing of his father earlier this week.
