If you are of the opinion that Dallas Eakins had to be stark-raving mad to sign with the Edmonton Oilers because they fire their coach every year, you should know a couple of things.

1. He signed a four-year contract.

2. If they fired him after next season they’d be paying three coaches at once: Ralph Krueger, Dallas Eakins and the guy they’d have to hire for the 2012-13 season.

Few first-year NHL coaches have ever had the security Dallas Eakins begins his NHL coaching career with here.

“When there’s been that many coaches, the odds are actually in my favour now,” Eakins laughed Tuesday of being the fifth head coach in the last six years.

It was confirmed earlier Tuesday that he’d signed a four-year contract.

Eakins said the Oilers asked that he refer to the length of his contract as being “multi-year” and thus neither confirmed or denied the four-year term when asked.
