TORONTO - The Vancouver Canucks have the green light to speak with Dallas Eakins.

The Dallas Stars reportedly have met with Lindy Ruff and apparently have contacted Alain Vigneault.

Welcome to the NHL’s coaching sweepstakes. Let the suits fall where they may.

Confirming a weekend report from Hockey Night in Canada, Maple Leafs vice-president Dave Poulin acknowledged to Sun Media on Monday evening that the Canucks have asked permission to hold discussions with the Marlies bench boss concerning the vacant Vancouver coaching spot.

Because Eakins has a clause in his Marlies contract allowing him a window to take an NHL job, Poulin said the request from Vancouver was just a formality. Moving forward, Eakins and the Canucks are free to talk assuming there is mutual interest.
