TORONTO - Ron MacLean came to the defence Sunday of Don Cherry whose comments about women in locker rooms landed him in controversy — once again.

During a Saturday night segment of Coach’s Corner, Cherry objected to female reporters being allowed in male dressing rooms.

“He’s seen the worst things,” MacLean told the Toronto Sun Sunday. “And he knows that the relationship with players, coaches, and the media is often really hostile so I knew right away his heart would be in the right place.”

MacLean’s face dropped and he audibly sighed the minute Cherry mentioned female reporters.

“But the idea that you could eliminate women from doing their job was obviously a no-go so I knew it would be a Twitter tempest and that’s why I (had) a little face of exasperation,” MacLean said.

Cherry was harshly criticized for his comments on Twitter and elsewhere.
