BOSTON - It was a strange sight, but indicative of the extraordinary hours that unfolded here.

Outside the window of my hotel Friday morning I could see a deserted Boston Common during what should have been a bustling and busy morning commute under partly-sunny skies.

Come the evening, after a day of strangely vacant streets and an eery quiet, which was only interrupted by the haunting wail of the occasional siren, nothing had changed to ease the blanket of tension and uncertainty that settled on this city like the darkness.
