So you need penalty minutes, but aren’t sure who to pick up. The NHL’s prime purveyors of PIMs and points -- including Wayne Simmonds, Milan Lucic, Steve Ott and Ryan Clowe (though he has managed just six assists this season) -- are long gone, so you’re left sifting through the pugs and fourth-liners, few of whom offer anything else fantasy-wise than penalty minutes.
The most realistic target, therefore, is someone with high penalty totals who, at worst, doesn’t hurt you in any other category and, at best, is capable of chipping in elsewhere.
Most notable right now is Canadiens’ LW Brandon Prust who, at 22% ownership in Yahoo! leagues, is quickly gaining popularity with his league-leading 76 PIMs, two goals, five points and a solid plus-9. He also has contributed 49 hits and 13 blocks and has some upside skating on the Habs’ second line. Others to consider:
Chris Neil OTT (68): He’s actually owned in 23% of leagues, but that’s more from draft-day reputation.
