Fantasy Fare: Backup goalies step up

Backup netminders, true to many forecasts, are taking a much larger share of the spotlight than they are accustomed to. Ducks rookie Viktor Fasth is 8-0-0 and was swiftly rewarded with a two-year extension, leading many to wonder if he has supplanted Jonas Hiller. Ray Emery is undefeated in seven starts for the Blackhawks. Ben Scrivens of the Maple Leafs posted back-to-back shutouts earlier this week. And you could even say that Roberto Luongo, who began the year behind Cory Schneider on the Canucks depth chart, has reclaimed his No. 1 job. Luongo aside, those understudies were likely all available off the waiver wire and now are reaping dividends for their owners. The encouraging news, if you’ve missed out so far, is that the run is likely not going to abate. The tight schedule, injuries, and playoff-desperate coaches will make sure the No. 2s play a key role the rest of the way. So, who to keep an eye on now?
