Ilya Kovalchuk, whose goal and assist Thursday ended a five-game points drought, has, predictably, struggled for offensive consistency without both of last season’s linemates -- Zack Parise (free agency) and Adam Henrique (thumb injury). Yes, Henrique is finally back, but he is centring David Clarkson and Patrik Elias on what clearly is Jersey’s No. 1 line. In the end, Kovalchuk may be held back in trying to regain last year’s form until the Devils cave in and put him with either Henrique or Elias, the team’s top two playmakers.
