The world didn’t end Friday as predicted by the Mayans, but the NHL Players’ Association traveled the road to what could be the end of either the season or the lockout.

In what can be viewed as a huge show of support for NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, the players voted overwhelmingly to allow the executive board to file a disclaimer of interest if necessary by Jan. 2.

New York Islanders winger Brad Boyes, a member of the NHLPA’s bargaining committee, told Hockey Night in Canada radio the players haven’t been left with many options.

“This is something we’re doing for a reason,” said Boyes, who signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Isles. “This is not for show or anything like that. We’re at a point where guys want to exhaust all options and do everything we can to avoid this.
