As if U.S. President Barack Obama needed another task added to his already expansive list of political items as America’s so-called “fiscal cliff” quickly approaches.

During a sit down interview at the White House with Minnesota CBS affiliate WCCO Minneapolis this week, Obama was asked if he’d be willing to intervene in the NHL’s ongoing labour woes.

As reported earlier this week, prevalent thought is that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is close to issuing an “end all date” to pressure the NHLPA into waving its white flag. As the NHL lockout entered Day 90 on Friday, at least one Minneapolis reporter turned to someone he half-heartedly framed as a last hope.

“The president of the United States shouldn’t have to get involved in a sports lockout,” Obama said rather seriously. “My message to owners and to players is, you guys make a lot of money and you make a lot of money on the backs of fans, so do right by your fans.

“You can figure out how to spread out a bunch of revenue that you’re bringing in, but do right by the people who support you. And I shouldn’t have to be involved in a dispute between really wealthy players and even wealthier owners."

It would seem the NHL’s second lockout in less than 10 years is beginning to get under the president’s skin. It’s the second time in as many months Obama has been asked give his take on what's become a public relations nightmare, the last coming at the end of October on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

"I just want to remind the owners and the players: you guys make money because you've got a whole bunch of fans out there who are working really hard,” Obama told Leno at the time. “They buy tickets. They're watching on TV. Y'all should be able to figure this out. Get this done."

Obama added this week: “Remember who it is that’s putting all that money in your (the players and owners) pockets.
