Maple Leafs owner Larry Tanenbaum's optimism about NHL talks shrivels

NEW YORK - When six NHL owners were conscripted by commissioner Gary Bettman to meet with players this week, it was seen as a potential breakthrough toward cracking the stubborn lockout.

After a day it looked like a good move as the billionaires felt they had given enough to the millionaires to get things moving.

So when it all broke down on Thursday night at least one owner questioned the willingness of the NHL Players’ Association to make an agreement at all.
