The NHL and NHL Players' Association will return to the bargaining table Tuesday without their two biggest players.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr won't be in the room Tuesday in New York City when six owners and six players sit down to see if they can come up with a way to end 78-day old lockout.

Bettman floated the idea to Fehr Thursday after talks with a federal mediator broke down. Each side is allowed one staff member, which means NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and union special counsel Steve Fehr will be in the room.
