NHL notes: Wings' Filppula out long term
By QMI Agency
Detroit Red Wings forward Valtteri Filppula, who has been playing for Jokerit in Finland during the lockout, will miss the next 6-8 weeks with a knee injury, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Filppula hurt his right knee -- MLive.com reported it as an MCL sprain -- during a game Tuesday. The severity of the injury was revealed Wednesday after the 28-year-old had an MRI done.
In 81 games last season, Filppula had 23 goals and 43 assists. With Jokerit, he had 15 points in 16 games.
SIMMONDS LEAVES TEAM
Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds has left the Czech team he'd been playing for, hot on the heels of St. Louis Blues forward Chris Stewart.
Stewart left Liberec of the Czech Extraliga to return to a German team, Crimmitschau, he played for earlier this season. Simmonds, meanwhile, appears to be headed back to Canada, according to a translated statement from the Liberec website.
"(Simmonds) told us that is some serious family reasons forced to immediately return home to Canada," Liberec general manager Ctibora Jecha said, adding that he wouldn't rule out a return to the club by Simmonds.
News of his departure came the same day as the arrest of eight men who allegedly made racial taunts toward Simmonds -- fans started chanting the Czech word for monkey -- during a game against Chomutov in late October. They face a hearing Jan. 9 in Chomutov court.
