Chunk of games on chopping block this week
By BRUCE GARRIOCH, QMI Agency
Hockey Night in Canada is about to take another hit.
The NHL and the players union will sit down in Toronto Tuesday to resume talks for a new collective bargaining agreement, but regardless of what happens more games will be cancelled later this week.
It is no accident the news of further cancellations has been leaked on the eve of more CBA talks, but it's also a financial reality.
With the first two weeks of the schedule, through Oct. 24, already gone, the league likely will take down a larger chunk this time to allow NHL owners to free up their buildings and start to book replacement shows.
As for the NHL's Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs set for Ann Arbor, Mich., on Jan. 1, the belief is if there is no labour deal in place by mid-November the game will be called off.
