The Philadelphia Flyers probably won't have defenceman Andrej Meszaros available for the start of the playoffs.

The Flyers announced Monday that Meszaros needs surgery to remove a small disc fragment in his lower back and is expected to be out of the lineup for 6-8 weeks, which means he will likely miss at least the first round of the playoffs. Meszaros, who has already missed nine games because of his bad back, will have the surgery Wednesday.

In 62 games this season, Meszaros has seven goals and 18 assists. He's also averaged more than 20 minutes of ice time.

The Flyers are already without captain Chris Pronger, who was shut down months ago after experiencing lingering concussion symptoms, and Pavel Kubina, who is out day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Kubina was acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning just before the trade deadline this season.

BOLTS HAVE BACKUP PLAN

The Tampa Bay Lightning has made a move to bolster its goaltending, signing journeyman Sebastien Caron to a pro-rated one-year contract.

Caron, 31, went on re-entry waivers Monday at noon, and must clear them before he can play for Tampa. He has not played in the NHL since the 2006-07 season, when he played one game each for the Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks.

The Lightning is seeking a backup to Dwayne Roloson, who has taken over from the injured Mathieu Garon (groin) as the No. 1 goalie.

Dustin Tokarski, recalled from the AHL's Norfolk Admirals, has been filling in.

Caron had a 25-3-0 record with a 2.57 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage for the Iserlohn Roosters of Germany's top league.

WINGS NEED INFO

Injured Detroit Red Wings backup goalie Joey MacDonald will see a back specialist Tuesday in an effort to better understand the results of an MRI he had done Monday, according to MLive.com.

MacDonald had back spasms and pain down his legs during the Wings' game in Anaheim last Wednesday. How long he will be out is an issue with the Red Wings, who can't recall Ty Conklin from Grand Rapids until after the regular season ends or they risk losing him on re-entry waivers.

The Wings got some bad news about forward Darren Helm's knee injury Monday. He was hurt Saturday when hit by San Jose's Dominic Moore.

Helm will miss 4-6 weeks with a knee injury An MRI Monday revealed a second-degree sprain of the MCL in Helm's left knee.

BRIEFLY

For the second week in a row, Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov was chosen the NHL's first star. Chicago Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford was second star and Nashville Predators forward Martin Erat was third. Bryzgalov, who had three wins last week, set a Flyers record with 249 minutes 43 seconds of shutout hockey. Crawford allowed just three goals in three games while Erat had seven points in four games ... New York Rangers forward Artem Anisimov missed his second straight game Monday but says his shoulder injury isn't serious. Anisimov, who was hurt Thursday against Pittsburgh, told reporters in New York he's "day-to-day" ... Montreal Canadiens defenceman Tomas Kaberle likely won't play Wednesday in Buffalo. Kaberle is still on paternity leave and is also reportedly dealing with a minor upper-body injury as well.
