Don Cherry blasts 'infamous quote'
By QMI Agency

TORONTO - A Canadian Press list of infamous quotes from 2011 places Don Cherry in the No. 1 spot. Thing is, he says he never said it.

The CP story released earlier this week - and picked up by several news organizations all over the country - lists quotes of the past year "that made Canadians chuckle or shake their heads."

Cherry was given top honours by writer Linda Shearma.

The story says: "And the No. 1 most infamous quote of 2011 also comes from the seemingly impossible-to-please host of Coach's Corner. 'This just proves what a nation of pussies we are.' - Don Cherry on news that Canada's murder rate is at its lowest since the 1960s."

When reached by QMI Agency's Joe Warmington on Friday, Cherry was not impressed.

"They better have proof that I said it because I never did. It's a new low from people trying to get the CBC to fire me," Cherry told Warmington.

"I have heard stuff like this before about things I didn't say - like with the torture of prisoners and using batteries on them. I didn't say that either.

"I would never make fun of people dying or the murder rate and I guess I am going to have to set a precedent and stand up to people saying false things."
