QUEBEC CITY – Quebec City is looking for ways to finance a new hockey arena without Ottawa’s help.

Mayor Regis Labeaume hinted Wednesday his administration had a “Plan B” to finance the NHL-calibre arena and insisted it would be built with or without federal funds.

But he added he was still confident Ottawa would foot at least part of the bill.

The proposed project is part of a planned Olympic bid and necessary for the return of the Quebec Nordiques franchise to the provincial capital.

The city and the province of Quebec have pledged 45% of the estimated $400 million cost of the new rink. Quebec wanted the federal government to ante up the rest.

But while the Conservatives have flirted with pitching in some cash in the past, they’ve always insisted the private sector also had to do its bit.

Labeaume, however, remained tight-lipped Wednesday on how he planned to raise funds, only saying he wouldn’t tax individuals to help with the financing.
