A longtime Winnipeg Jets supporter is hoping to get a new fan bandwagon rolling this weekend.

Winnipegger Ken Morrissette started up the Winnipeg Jets Fan Challenge Facebook group last week and is planning an event called "We heard you Mr. Bettman ... now hear us!" to coincide with this weekend's Hockey Night in Canada Play On! street hockey tournament at Memorial Park.

"We want Mr. Bettman's attention." Morrissette said. "(CBC's) Hockey Night In Canada is going to be here hosting the ball hockey tournament so it's a perfect opportunity to go out there and show them how much we love hockey."

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in an internal e-mail last month he would rather the league return the Phoenix Coyotes to Winnipeg than allow BlackBerry billionaire Jim Balsillie to buy the franchise and move it to Hamilton.

"There is a team coming back to Winnipeg someday, and maybe we can help get it a little sooner," said Morrissette, 34, who works as an event planner.

"I'm not trying to be the face of a movement or anything, I just thought I'd do my part to get the fans together."

Morrissette said he'll be playing in the tourney on a team named for his Facebook group and is encouraging all who come to wear Jets gear or at least white shirts.

"It's about getting the Jets fans back together and to let people know we're getting prepared if there is an opportunity to get the Jets back," Morrissette said.

Action at the ball hockey tournament starts Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. and runs all day.

As of yesterday, the event had more than 350 confirmed guests on Facebook.
