Hockey history chock-full of quirky goalies
By SCOTT FISHER, SUN MEDIA

Plenty of goaltenders have been identified as eccentrics over the years. Here are a few of the odd-balls:

- Gilles Gratton: Said he was reincarnated, and refused to play when the moon was in the wrong part of the sky.

- Jacques Plante: Knitted in the locker-room.

- Glenn Hall: Vomited before every game.

- Gary Smith: Showered between every period.

- Mike Palmateer: Ate popcorn by the bucket between periods.

- Patrick Roy: Talked to his goalposts, and had a weird twitch that involved a lot of head and neck movements.

- Tony Esposito: Created an imaginary crease around his equipment, which no one was allowed to touch, in the dressing room.

- Martin Biron: Wore the same skates for 12 years.

- Arturs Irbe: Wore same pads for 14 years. One goalie said, "I wouldn't wear those pads for a pick-up game."

- Bernie Parent: Never left the locker-room without putting his mask on. And he'd never take it off unless he was back in the room.
