DENVER -- Vancouver 2010 remains the last Winter Olympics with National Hockey League involvement.

"We know Vancouver will be great because of the importance of hockey to Canada," said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. "But beyond that we haven't made any decisions."

The league will shut down for two weeks to release players for national team duty, as it did for Nagano 1998, Salt Lake 2002 and Torino 2006. The NHL and its Players Association have not agreed to play in Sochi 2014, but Bettman said there is no hurry for a resolution.

"No other sports league of our level stops to do this," Bettman said at the Sportaccord convention. "This is very hard to do. We don't make money off it. We've done this because it's good for the game."

Bettman said competition is the biggest issue when the "season comes to a screeching halt" every four years so that 150 players can risk wear and tear in the quest for gold while 600 other NHLers go on vacation.
