Probert gets surprise
By LANCE HORNBY -- Sun Media
One of the more interesting cameos in the upcoming Mike Myers movie The Love Guru is by Bob Probert, the Detroit Red Wings/Chicago Blackhawks ruffian who ranks fifth in NHL history with 3,300 penalty minutes.
But Probert was shocked when he showed up for his shoot and was handed a No. 28 sweater to wear in the movie, which has been filming in Toronto.
That was Tie Domi's number, his dance partner during some of the most memorable fights in NHL history.
"I thought they were messing with my mind," Probert told the Windsor Star.
A CZECH CHRISTMAS
Maple Leafs defenceman Tomas Kaberle was looking forward to a Raleigh reunion in the next couple of days, with his parents in from the Czech Republic and staying with brother Frantisek's family.
Frantisek has been a healthy scratch of late after being part of the Carolina Hurricanes' Stanley Cup drive in 2006.
"He's a good defenceman, he deserves more," Tomas said yesterday.
One of Toronto's top hockey dads passed away last week at 74.
Bill Kitchen, whose sons Mike and Bill Jr. played in the NHL and had separate careers with the Leafs, had been battling cancer. Funeral services are today from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Schomberg Community Arena. Mike Kitchen is an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers.
The San Jose Sharks aren't missing goaltender Vesa Toskala yet. Evgeni Nabokov has started all 32 games so far and ranks second in the league with a 1.99 goals-against average. Toronto plays in San Jose on Jan. 12 ... This Friday marks the 20th anniversary of what likely will be the final 0-0 NHL game to be played in Toronto. The Leafs' Allan Bester and the Minnesota North Stars' Karri Takko combined for 61 saves through 65 minutes at Maple Leaf Gardens ... Mats Sundin's next goal will tie him with the idle Teemu Selanne for 26th place in NHL history with 540, one behind Stan Mikita at 541.
