OTTAWA -- The NHL's salary cap is going up next season.

Sources said today the NHL Players' Association has elected an upper limit of $50.3 million next season with a floor of $34.3 million. Last year, the cap was $44 million.

When the league and union returned from the lockout for the 2005-06 season, the first NHL salary cap was $39 million. Less than two years later, it has already grown by almost 29 per cent.

The decision comes on the eve of unrestricted free agency opening tomorrow.
