Status quo for now

DALLAS -- The NHL has failed in its bid to change the schedule.

The league decided this morning to stick with its current unbalanced format, but a change hasn't been ruled out after the 2007-08 season.

The current format has been much maligned for pitting division rivals against each other too often, while squads sometimes don't even see teams from the other conference in their own rinks for two years.

"We took a vote and people wanted the status quo to remain," said Florida Panthers GM/coach Jacques Martin.

League governors are in Dallas for the league's all-star game festivities and mid-season meetings.
