Two thumbs up for league DVD

Six-foot-seven behemoth Hal Gill can't stand divers.

"There is nothing worse than lightly shoving a guy and he falls down to try to (induce) a penalty," he said. "It's frustrating (because) my job is to clear the front of the net."

In order to make that job easier, the NHL has sent the teams a DVD indicating the do's and don'ts of battling in front of the net. It shows Chris Pronger and Brendan Shanahan locking horns just outside the crease .

"On Pronger and Shanahan they were telling us not to get the arms extended," Leafs general manager John Ferguson said. "That's where it looks bad. If you get up close to the person and just kind of push, they will allow you some room to clear the area if it's not interference and it's not a cross check."

WELCOME MATS

Captain Mats Sundin was thrilled with the hiring of Doug Gilmour by the Leafs. "Doug Gilmour has done so many things as a player for this organization. To me, he ended a long drought of no playoffs and started a run of playoffs for a lot of years here."

LOOSE LEAFS

Forward Brent Aubin has parlayed an excellent rookie camp into an NHL entry level contract with the Leafs. Aubin, who tied linemate John Mitchell with 11 points in the rookie tournament, is in his second Leafs camp ... Business-like Paul Maurice didn't crack a smile on the ice yesterday, but did take a quick moment to savour his first day as he took the last few steps to the Ricoh Coliseum ice. "You basically work in three places in this job, on the ice, behind the bench and in the locker room and for the last 31/2 months I didn't really get to one of them," Maurice said. "It's nice to feel like you're working." ... A limited number of Leafs single-game regular season tickets go on sale at 11 a.m. today through Ticketmaster (416-872-5000) or at www.mapleleafs.com
