Canadians turned to Donald Trump in place of Don Cherry during the NHL lockout.
Television viewers unable to get their pro hockey fix during the work stoppage that canceled the 2004-05 NHL season may have sought out reality series like The Apprentice for entertainment, according to Statistics Canada.
A survey released yesterday found Canadians spent 6.5% of their TV viewing time in the fall of 2004 watching sports, compared with 8.2% the previous fall. Meanwhile, variety and game shows gained in popularity as viewers spent 15.2% of their time in front of the TV watching reality shows like Survivor, up from 12.9% in 2003.
Survey analyst Lotfi Chahdi said the lockout resulted in less sports programming in 2004.
