AROUND THE BOARDS: Winger Owen Nolan hasn't been given medical clearance to play after having knee surgery, but league sources say he's free to sign with anybody who wants to take a chance. While there has been talk the Senators are interested, they're not alone.

Calgary GM Darryl Sutter is also in hot pursuit of Nolan, while San Jose GM Doug Wilson has confirmed his interest. "I look at Owen Nolan as a guy who I have great respect for," Wilson told the Sun. "He's got to get healthy before it becomes a realistic consideration, but he's a definitely a guy who I would be interested in if he was healthy." Nolan is living in the San Jose area and is waiting for the NHLPA to set a date for a his grievance hearing against the Leafs ... Edmonton GM Kevin Lowe and coach Craig MacTavish both played with Mark Messier in New York when the club won the Stanley Cup in 1994, but neither went on the ice wearing a Rangers sweater during Thursday's tribute. "We're old school in a lot of respects," said MacTavish. "And we're a superstitious lot. The last thing we wanted our players to see was us out there wearing the Rangers jersey while they were getting prepared to play the Rangers."

RUMOURS DU JOUR: After firing coach Claude Julien, is GM Bob Gainey working on a big one. The talk is the Habs are going to send G Jose Theodore to the Avs in a three-way deal that could include the Penguins. The word is that David Aebischer could land with Pittsburgh, while a No. 1 pick and another player could be dealt to the Habs. Sources say Gainey is also trying to create a market for D Mike Komisarek. The Red Wings want depth on the blueline and may be interested. It doesn't stop there ... the Habs are also believed to be talking to the Blackhawks about a dealing involving C Mike Ribiero for LW Kyle Calder ... Is Tampa GM Jay Feaster going to have to deal C Brad Richards? With the signings of C Vincent Lecavalier and RW Martin St. Louis in the off-season, there may not be room left for Richards. Sources say the Nashville Predators, who need help in the middle and consider themselves a Cup contender. Nashville has also let the Panthers know they wouldn't mind getting Olli Jokinen, who Florida is hoping to sign and keep ... Two names that are potential candidates for Isles GM spot: Vancouver's Steve Tambellini and NHL VP Colin Campbell ... The Senators checked the market for LW Vaclav Varada, but weren't able to find anybody with serious interest ... The Coyotes are trying to move underachieving C Petr Nedved, who has been a healthy scratch. There's talk the Rangers are interested because he might perform well with Jaromir Jagr ... There's talk the Flyers are either going to deal or waive D Chris Therien ... The No. 1 candidate to take over the Edmonton goaltending duties is Washington's Olaf Kolzig. GM George McPhee hasn't decided if he's going to trade Kolzig yet, but Oilers GM Kevin Lowe is anxiously waiting to find out ... The Panthers aren't happy with G Roberto Luongo after he thumbed his nose at a five-year, $30- million deal last week. "I don't want to spend another five years here watching the playoffs on television," said Luongo. But sources say the Panthers are going to wait until the summer to trade Luongo. The Canucks, Avs and Canadiens are all expected to make a pitch.

Have a nice Sunday.
