NHL referee Don Van Massenhoven of Strathroy was released from a south Florida hospital yesterday, but it will be at least five to six weeks before he can return to the ice.

He hopes his injury won't affect his assignment to the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, which was announced by the NHL yesterday.

Van Massenhoven underwent seven hours of facial reconstruction last week after being hit by a deflected slapshot.

He's now in a Fort Lauderdale hotel, but won't return home for two more weeks.

"The surgeons want me to stay around here," he said last night.

"With the amount of work they did, they want to be able to examine me. They're the ones who were in there."
