Labour strife ... by the numbers

NHL

1992: Strike lasted 10 days trying to reduce number of rounds in the entry draft.

1994-95: The lockout lasted 103 days and led to a shortened 48-game season. Rookie salary cap implemented; heavier compensation for losing players aged 25-31 in free agency; unrestricted free agency raised from 30 to 32, until 1997 when 31 became the age.

NBA

1998-99: Lockout lasted 202 days; season reduced to 52 games. Salary cap implemented

NFL

1982: Weeks 3-9 cancelled, lasted 57 days.

1987: Players went on strike again to try and gain free agency and higher salaries, but the NFL responded by hiring substitute players and continuing to play, having missed only two weeks of the season. The strike ended after 24 days when the players went back without any of their demands having been met.

MLB

1972: Strike lasted 86 days over pensions.

1972: Lockout lasted 17 days over salary arbitration.

1976: Lockout lasted 17 days over free agency.

1980: Strike lasted eight days over free-agent compensation.

1981: Strike lasted 50 days over free-agent compensation.

1985: Strike lasted two days over salary arbitration.

1990: Lockout lasted 32 days over salary arbitration and salary cap.

1994: Strike lasted 232 days over salary cap and revenue sharing. Season cancelled; no World Series champion.
