NHL Playoffs: NYR @ BOS

Sparks can only watch American teammates
By TERRY KOSHAN, QMI Agency

Guelph Storm goalie Garret Sparks watches as a slap shot from Sarnia Sting forward Reid Boucher (not pictured) gets past him to open the scoring while Sting forwards Alex Galchenyuk, left, and Charlie Sarault, right, wait on the doorstep during the first period Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 at the RBC Centre in Sarnia, Ont. (QMI Agency/PAUL OWEN)

UFA, RUSSIA - The Americans’ third-string goalie at the 2013 World Junior Championship designed his mask for the tournament, but he won’t be wearing it.

Not only will Sparks, a seventh-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs who plays for the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League, probably watch every game from the stands, his mask got held up in customs in Finland.

It has eagles on both side, honouring both his country and favourite goalie, Hall of Famer Ed Belfour.
