Maple Leafs prospect Tyler Biggs to get U.S. world junior call

TORONTO - The Maple Leafs’ potential representation on the world junior stage will be broadened on Tuesday.

Forward Tyler Biggs and goaltender Garret Sparks will be on the U.S. preliminary roster for the 2013 world junior championship when the Americans make their announcement.

Biggs, the 22nd pick overall by the Leafs in 2011, has settled in nicely with the Oshawa Generals. The right winger has 31 points in 30 games, including 10 in his past seven. The 19-year-old is developing into the leader the Generals figured they were getting when he left Miami University (Ohio) after one season.

Sparks has been sharp for the Guelph Storm, compiling a 15-7-3 record with a .916 save percentage and a 2.91 goals-against average in 2012-13. Sparks was selected 190th overall by the Leafs in 2011.

Also, defenceman Tom Nilsson, chosen 100th overall by Toronto last year, has been named to Sweden’s preliminary roster. Nilsson has a good shot of making the team, as only eight defencemen w
