Mark Scheifele ventured into unchartered territory this week, and enjoyed what he saw.

“I’ve never had a five-point night in a playoff game,” the Winnipeg Jets prospect, on the phone from Barrie, Ont., was saying, Tuesday. “It was fun to have that. And it was even better to get the win.”

Scheifele’s latest exploits came Monday night, two goals and three assists in Game 3 of the Ontario Hockey League final against the London Knights.

It was the 20-year-old’s biggest night in a spring loaded with them.

The OHL’s player-of-the-week is also its top playoff scorer, with 34 points (11 goals, 23 assists) in 18 games, including seven points in three games in the final.

More importantly, his team is actually in a final, leading the favoured Knights two games to one.

This is exactly what the Winnipeg Jets were hoping for when they put Scheifele’s NHL dream on hold and sent him back to the junior ranks three months ago.
