Connor McDavid, 15, has been granted exceptional-player status and will be eligible for the Ontario Hockey League draft this year as an underage player.

McDavid, a forward with the Toronto Marlboros AAA minor midgets, is the third player ever granted the special status by the Ontario Hockey Federation. The others were centre John Tavares in 2005 and defenceman Aaron Ekblad in 2011.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound McDavid had 33 goals and 39 assists in 33 games. He led the 2012 OHL Cup showcase tournament with 19 points, including 11 goals, in seven games.

Would Patrick Roy make a good coach for the Colorado Avalanche?
