Canada advances to Hlinka semifinal
By QMI Agency

Canada’s under-18 team didn’t waste any time getting a foothold on a berth in the semifinals of the Ivan Hlinka memorial tournament.

The Canadians scored twice in the first 73 seconds Wednesday en route to a 6-0 thumping of Switzerland at Alcaplast Arena in Breclav, Czech Republic.

Canada will meet Russia in a semifinal game Friday. Sweden and Finland will meet in the other semifinal.

“We were able to get the puck in deep and we were able to protect the puck down low and use our size and strength in the offensive zone.” Canadian coach Steve Spott said.

Derrick Pouliot, Kerby Rychel, Scott Laughton and Andreas Athanasiou scored first-period goals.

Hunter Shinkaruk made it 5-0 in the second and Athanasiou scored again in the third.

Daniel Altshuller and Domenic Graham combined to make 27 saves for the shutout.

Canada’s Sean Monahan got a 10-minute misconduct with six seconds left for checking to the head.
