Be careful what you wish for.

The Prince Albert Raiders are living proof you just might get it.

The Raiders have been praying for — and falling just short of — a playoff spot for a few years.

They clinched at least a spot in the tie-breaker game with Wednesday’s 6-2 win over the Calgary Hitmen at the Dome.

Their reward once they lock up their spot this weekend?

A date with the WHL’s top dogs, the Saskatoon Blades, in the opening round of the playoffs.

That’ll be just fine with Raiders bench boss Bruno Campese.

“We’ve worked hard,” Campese said. “The last couple of years, we’ve been close.

“So we know the pain.”

It’s a pain that’s been felt for some time by the Hitmen.

But Campese took no extra gratification from moving one step closer to the post-season at the expense of his former employer.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve been here, but I certainly enjoyed my time working for the Hitmen organization” said Campese, who was an assistant coach under Richard Kromm from 2002 to 2004.

“I still have a great deal of respect for the people who are involved here.”

Austin Connor, Todd Fiddler, Brandon Herrod, Igor Revenko, Mark McNeill and Calgarian Justin Maylan filled the net for the Raiders (29-36-5).

Rookies Rob Trzonkowski and Alex Roach replied late in the third period for the Hitmen (20-45-5), who will close out the season with a home-and-home set with the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Connor put the visitors on the board just 2:02 into the game when he picked off a pass at the Hitmen blueline.

He walked in all alone and was stopped by Hitmen starter Brandon Glover, but batted his rebound out of the air.

Fiddler made a nice deke to the backhand later in the period to make it two-zip.

The Raiders potted a pair of powerplay goals in the middle frame to seize full control.

Prince Albert closes out the season with a pair against the Swift Current Broncos while the ninth-place Lethbridge Hurricanes face the Kootenay Ice twice.
