Hitmen dropped by Warriors

Two ex-Calgary Hitmen players didn’t have to wait long to punish their old team.

Cody Beach and MacKenzie Royer, traded to the Moose Jaw Warriors last Tuesday, both found the scoresheet to help the Tribe beat their former teammates 6-3 Sunday night.

Beach had a pair of assists, while Royer scored his second goal in as many games with his new squad.

Jimmy Bubnick, Justin Kirsch and Kris Foucault replied for the Hitmen, who dropped to 5-16-1 on the season.

Foucault said his former teammates played well.

“They’re playing with some good players,” Foucault said. “They both have a lot of potential, and they’ve been put in a position to succeed.

“But our new guys (forwards Nathan MacMaster and Danny Gayle and goaltender Brandon Glover) handled it well, too. They played with a lot of emotion.”

Dylan Hood and Spencer Edwards had two goals apiece and Sam Fioretti had a single for the Warriors (13-10-0-1).

Moose Jaw converted on three of its six powerplays, while Calgary came up empty on all five of its opportunities.

The hosts outshot the Hitmen 34-26.

The Hitmen, who host the Edmonton Oil Kings Tuesday night at the Dome (7 p.m., Fan 960), snapped a 12-game losing skid with a 5-3 win in Brandon Friday night.

Foucault, who was named the game’s third star Sunday night, said the team is noticeably looser after ending the futility streak.

“We’re playing with a lot more confidence,” he said. “We didn’t want to set the franchise record (with 13 straight losses), that’s for sure.”

The Hitmen find themselves in last place in the WHL with a steep uphill battle ahead of them in their quest to nail down a playoff berth.

But if they’re to have any chance at all, games against teams like the Oil Kings become must-wins.

“We have to look at it like we’re in the playoffs, or we won’t even be close,” Foucault said of the intensity the team needs to display.

“But Mike (Williamson) is a good coach, and Kelly (Kisio, GM) is a smart man, so we’ll get things figured out.”
