McKegg will miss Russian tilt

The London stop of the Canadian Hockey League’s Canada-Russia Subway Super Series will be missing one special ingredient Nov. 11 — Greg McKegg.

The Erie Otters’ star forward and St. Thomas native will not play for the OHL against the Russians at the John Labatt Centre because the OHL has tried to squeeze the special event into its jam-packed regular season schedule.

The Otters play three home games in Erie that week — on Nov. 10 against Guelph, Saginaw on Nov. 12 and the Knights Nov. 13.

Knights GM Mark Hunter, who picked the team along with Brampton’s Stan Butler, didn’t want to force McKegg, a Toronto Maple Leafs prospect and a potential scoring champ this year, into a five-hour ride to London for another intense contest.

“If it was a case of just picking guys to play in this game, Greg McKegg would’ve been here,” Hunter said, “but you have to look at their schedule, too. That would be four games in four nights for him and that’s a lot to ask from a guy.”

Instead, McKegg will play for the OHL in the Sudbury stop on Monday, Nov. 15.

It’s too bad because it’s not a familiar rink for him. McKegg has enjoyed great success at the JLC. He had three points in a game last week against the Knights and also scored for the Leafs in a preseason game against the Flyers last month.

A number of potential world junior players are in the same time crunch.

There are two games scheduled for Nov. 11 — Saginaw at Niagara and Sault Ste. Marie in Peterborough. No players on those four teams can play in London.

Knights defenceman Scott Harrington and forward Michael MacDonald will represent the home team in the London stop of the series.

Goalie Igor Bobkov will play for Russia and forward Vladislav Namestnikov could be in their plans, too.

“It’s an honour to be chosen and you want to make a good impression for the world junior team,’’ Harrington said.

Tickets to the London series game are $26 plus a facility fee.
